Octupole strength in the neutron-rich calcium isotopes
Low-lying excited states of the neutron-rich calcium isotopes Ca
have been studied via -ray spectroscopy following inverse-kinematics
proton scattering on a liquid hydrogen target using the GRETINA -ray
tracking array. The energies and strengths of the octupole states in these
isotopes are remarkably constant, indicating that these states are dominated by
proton excitations.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Spectroscopy of Ti and the systematic behavior of low energy octupole states in Ca and Ti isotopes
Excited states of the nucleus Ti have been studied, via both
inverse-kinematics proton scattering and one-neutron knockout from Ti by
a liquid hydrogen target, using the GRETINA -ray tracking array.
Inelastic proton-scattering cross sections and deformation lengths have been
determined. A low-lying octupole state has been tentatively identified in
Ti for the first time. A comparison of results on low-energy
octupole states in the neutron-rich Ca and Ti isotopes with the results of
Random Phase Approximation calculations demonstrates that the observed
systematic behavior of these states is unexpected.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

Multifilamentary, in-situ Route, Cu-stabilized MgB2 Strands
Transport critical current densities and n-values were measured at 4.2 K in
fields up to 15 T on 7, 19, and 37-stack multifilamentary MgB2 strands made
using an in-situ route. Some strands included SiC additions (particle size 30
nm), while in others Mg-rich compositions were used. Two basic multifilamentary
variants were measured, the first had Nb filamentary barriers, the second had
Fe filamentary barriers. All samples incorporated stabilizer in the form of Cu
101. Simple, one-step heat treatments were used, with temperatures ranging from
700-800C, and times from 10-30 minutes. Transport critical current densities of
1.75 x 105 A/cm2 were seen at 4.2 K and 5 T in 37 stack strands.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figs, 2 table
Design of and initial results from a highly instrumented reactor for atmospheric chemistry (HIRAC)
International audienceThe design of a Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry (HIRAC) is described and initial results obtained from HIRAC are presented. The ability of HIRAC to perform in-situ laser-induced fluorescence detection of OH and HO2 radicals with the Fluorescence Assay by Gas Expansion (FAGE) technique establishes it as internationally unique for a chamber of its size and pressure/temperature variable capabilities. In addition to the FAGE technique, HIRAC features a suite of analytical instrumentation, including: a multipass FTIR system; a conventional gas chromatography (GC) instrument and a GC instrument for formaldehyde detection; and NO/NO2, CO, O3, and H2O vapour analysers. Ray tracing simulations and measurements of the blacklamp flux have been utilized to develop a detailed model of the radiation field within HIRAC. Comparisons between the analysers and the FTIR coupled to HIRAC have been performed, and HIRAC has also been used to investigate pressure dependent kinetics of the chlorine atom reaction with ethene and the reaction of O3 and t-2-butene. The results obtained are in good agreement with literature recommendations and Master Chemical Mechanism predictions. HIRAC thereby offers a highly instrumented platform with the potential for: (1) high precision kinetics investigations over a range of atmospheric conditions; (2) detailed mechanism development, significantly enhanced according to its capability for measuring radicals; and (3) field instrument intercomparison, calibration, development, and investigations of instrument response under a range of atmospheric conditions
Temperature and Field Dependence of the Energy Gap of MgB2/Pb planar junction
We have constructed MgB2/Pb planar junctions for both temperature and field
dependence studies. Our results show that the small gap is a true bulk property
of MgB2 superconductor, not due to surface effects. The temperature dependence
of the energy gap manifests a nearly BCS-like behavior. Analysis of the effect
of magnetic field on junctions suggests that the energy gap of MgB2 depends
non-linearly on the magnetic field. Moreover, MgB2 has an upper critical field
of 15 T, in agreement with some reported Hc2 from transport measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
